A useful off-road trail lighting setup covers the places you need to see: the route ahead, the entry to a turn, ground beside the vehicle and the area behind it. Give each lamp position a job, then choose its beam, mounting format and controls. This makes it easier to spot a gap before buying another pair of lights.

For an importer, dealer or vehicle builder, the same plan becomes a clearer kit specification. A forward-light package and a slow-trail package may use different combinations even when they share a housing family. The [DXZ off-road lights range](https://dxzchina.com/archives/product-category/off-road-lights/) provides [spot, flood and combined-beam](https://dxzchina.com/spot-vs-flood-vs-combo-off-road-lights/) candidates; the layout below helps you decide which to shortlist.

## Assign each light a job on the vehicle

Start with the route you normally drive. Open sections place more emphasis on useful information ahead. Tight bends, ruts and slow technical ground call for nearby detail and trail-edge context. A single forward-facing pair can leave those side areas outside its useful coverage.

| Position or task | What the light should help you see | What to check on the vehicle |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Central forward lighting | The intended line farther ahead | Bumper or grille opening, aim adjustment and obstructions |
| Side and corner lighting | Turn entry, trail edge and nearby obstacles | Hood reflections, bodywork shadows and the direction of the beam |
| Close ground lighting | Ground beside the tires or beneath the vehicle | Suspension and tire movement, debris exposure and cable protection |
| Rear or scene lighting | Ground behind the vehicle while reversing, or an area used while stationary | Spare wheel, towbar and cargo shadows; separate control |
| Reduced-visibility operation | The remaining usable view when dust or rain reflects light back | Which lamps improve contrast and which add glare |

Install additional lights for tasks the vehicle's existing lighting leaves uncovered. Walk around the vehicle and note which areas it already covers. Rear illumination also needs its own assessment: lighting the ground while reversing and making a vehicle visible to following traffic are different tasks.

## Use actual dimensions to narrow the DXZ shortlist

The space available can decide the housing before the beam is chosen. A low opening may suit a rectangular BF6 lamp; an exposed mounting tab may suit a bracket-mounted BF3 pod. A panel installation needs a drawing for the opening and fixing points, as well as room behind the panel.

The table uses DXZ's current product specifications. Check each candidate against the actual mounting space and drawing before ordering.

| DXZ candidate | Listed beam and a task to evaluate | Listed lamp envelope |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [BF6-1F-5por](https://dxzchina.com/products/6-inch-five-lens-off-road-spot-light-kit/) | Spot; evaluate for a dedicated forward position | 160 × 59 × 46 mm; bottom adjustable bracket |
| [BF6-1F-20](https://dxzchina.com/products/6-inch-off-road-led-flood-light-bar/) | White flood; evaluate for nearby coverage from a low rectangular position | 160 × 59 × 46 mm; center bottom adjustable bracket |
| [BF3-A6por](https://dxzchina.com/products/3-inch-bracket-mount-combo-beam-off-road-light-kit/) | Spot + flood; evaluate where one compact position needs forward and nearby coverage | 80 × 90 × 55 mm overall envelope; bottom U-shaped bracket |
| [BF3-A20](https://dxzchina.com/products/3-inch-bracket-mount-off-road-flood-light-set/) | White flood; evaluate for nearby or side coverage with adjustable aim | 80 × 90 × 55 mm overall envelope; bottom U-shaped bracket |
| [BF3-B20](https://dxzchina.com/products/3-inch-flush-mount-off-road-flood-light-set/) | White flood; evaluate for nearby coverage from a panel location | 120 × 89 × 45 mm; flush-mount side ears |

The two BF6 examples have the same listed lamp dimensions but different beam roles. The BF3-A20 and BF3-B20 both have a flood designation, but their mounting formats need different space. Neither the nominal inch size nor the word “flood” settles the installation.

Allow for cable exit, connector access and bracket movement. The BF3-B20 envelope is not a cutout template; use its mounting drawing before cutting a panel. For any bumper or grille position, check the complete assembly with the vehicle's other equipment in place.

If the available position calls for another housing format, compare [LED light bars](https://dxzchina.com/archives/product-category/led-light-bars/) or [LED driving lights](https://dxzchina.com/archives/product-category/led-driving-lights/) against the same space and lighting task.

## Build a combination around the route

Use the following combinations as starting points for sample evaluation. The final aim and coverage need checking on the vehicle, with its normal load and accessories.

### Open tracks with occasional bends

A BF6-1F-5por spot set is a candidate for the dedicated forward role where the rectangular body fits. Keep a separate provision for nearby and side visibility if the route includes bends that the forward pair does not reveal. A compact flood candidate such as BF3-A20 can be assessed for that second task.

Check the transition between the forward beam and nearby coverage from the driver's seat. Adding another spot pair aimed in the same direction may leave the original corner gap unchanged. A long bar is another packaging option when the vehicle has the mounting width, but its length alone does not tell you which part of the trail it will light.

### Slow, tight trails

Begin with the ground and turn entry that disappear from view. Evaluate a flood position for nearby context and keep rear lighting separate if reversing is part of the route. BF3-A20 offers bracket adjustment; BF3-B20 is the panel-mount alternative to consider when the bodywork suits it.

A forward flood lamp does not automatically reveal the ground beside a tire. Bodywork and accessories can block that view, so check it on the actual build. If an underbody light is needed, select it specifically for that location and its exposure to debris and moving parts.

### Mixed routes with limited mounting points

BF3-A6por combines spot and flood in a compact bracket-mounted pod. It is a candidate when one available position must cover more than one forward lighting task. Its yellow center DRL is a separate feature from that combined main beam.

Keep a note of any remaining side or rear blind area during the sample check. A combined beam from the front cannot be assumed to cover every position around the vehicle.

## Check sightlines and glare before drilling

Select the beam and mounting position together. A central bumper position, an A-pillar bracket and a roof position put the lamp at different heights and beside different reflecting surfaces. The existing hood, mirrors, spare wheel and cargo can change the result.

For a side or ditch-light position, aim toward the area you need to see and inspect the hood and windscreen for reflected light. Open the hood fully and check physical clearance before final fixing. A universal lamp bracket does not establish compatibility with a particular vehicle's hinge or body mounting point.

A roof installation needs a check from the driver's seat for light on nearby bodywork and airborne particles. Keep it independently switchable so its contribution can be assessed separately. Adjust the aim on the installed vehicle, checking the trail area, vehicle height and reflections together.

For rear lighting, inspect the ground with the spare wheel, towbar and normal cargo fitted. A lamp that looks unobstructed in the workshop may cast a different shadow once the vehicle is loaded. Confirm the intended operating mode and controls before treating a rear-facing auxiliary lamp as part of a reverse-light installation.

## In dust, compare the usable view with each circuit

Dust, rain and other particles can reflect light toward the driver. More lamps can then add glare instead of useful detail. Check which circuit helps reveal the track under the conditions present, and switch off a circuit that makes the view worse.

Mounting and aim deserve attention before changing color. Keep forward, side and high-mounted lights on controls that let you compare their contribution. If dust obscures the route, reduce speed or stop until there is a usable view; auxiliary lighting cannot restore a view through every dust cloud.

For a yellow or amber option, first identify whether the color comes from the main beam or a separate accent. Then compare complete lamps under the same conditions, including mounting position, aim and output mode. Ask for those conditions when assessing a claim about improved visibility in dust.

## Separate the main beam from the DRL

BF6-1F-5por is listed as a spot lamp with a yellow DRL. The [BF6-1F-4por flood version](https://dxzchina.com/products/6-inch-off-road-flood-light-kit-x-drl/) has a yellow X-shaped DRL. Those descriptions distinguish the main lighting task from the separate DRL element; they do not describe a yellow main beam for illuminating a dusty trail.

When a product is offered with white/yellow operation, ask which emitters and modes produce each color, how those modes are selected and which mode a beam report measures. Ask for a demonstration of the selected sample if the product image does not make the operation clear.

Keep these functions explicit in a dealer kit description. A DRL feature, a photometric result and permission to use a lamp on a public road are separate matters. Check the exact lamp function, approval documents and installation requirements for the destination market before specifying road use.

## Specify the circuit and the supplied kit

The five tabled candidates list a 9-36V DC input range. That helps screen the vehicle supply, but the installation still needs a circuit designed around the selected lamps and cable run. Use the [relay and fuse wiring guide](https://dxzchina.com/how-to-wire-led-work-lights/) when planning the supply and switching, alongside the selected product's wiring information.

State how the forward main lights, side lights, rear lights and DRLs should operate. This is especially useful when a vehicle builder uses its own switch panel or when a dealer wants the same controls across repeat orders. Check the connector and wiring arrangement for that configuration before installation.

Supply format also varies by SKU. BF6-1F-5por and BF3-A6por are listed as sets with a wiring harness; BF6-1F-20, BF3-A20 and BF3-B20 are lamp sets supplied with packaging. Specify the harness separately for the latter group. Ask the quotation to identify the lamp quantity, mounting hardware, wiring and controls included in the selected package.

## Move from shortlist to drawing, evidence and sample

Before ordering a larger batch, use one installation layout to connect the product choice to the evidence you need:

1. Mark the forward, side and rear tasks on a vehicle photo. Add the available width, height and depth at each proposed position.
2. Request the exact SKU's mounting drawing and wiring information. Use the drawing for fixing points, adjustment and panel openings.
3. Request the available beam evidence for the selected configuration. Check the model identifier, operating mode, voltage, mounting height, aim and measured area before comparing it with another result.
4. Evaluate the sample on the vehicle. Check physical clearance, the driver's view, reflections and the contribution of each circuit before freezing the kit specification.

The [DXZ beam-map reading guide](https://dxzchina.com/dxz-laboratory/research-library/goniophotometer-testing/) explains why the conditions on a photometric report matter. A map from a stated setup is useful evidence for selection; it does not establish the driver's seeing distance on a different trail or prove a different installation will perform the same way.

Send [DXZ sales your shortlist and installation layout](https://dxzchina.com/contact/) to discuss the appropriate sample and document request. Include the destination market, vehicle voltage, proposed positions, lamp quantity and switching plan. For a repeat dealer or vehicle-build package, use the [OEM/ODM enquiry](https://dxzchina.com/oem-odm/) to add branding and packaging requirements so the quote describes the combination you intend to supply.

Use the [DXZ off-road light test records](https://dxzchina.com/dxz-laboratory/research-library/off-road-light-test-data/) as examples when reviewing report dates, electrical inputs and beam-map settings with your team.
